Patient's Rights
You have the right to:
- Considerate and respectful care, regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, culture, disabilities or religious beliefs
- Know the name and title of people involved in your care, as designated by ID badges, photographs in the reception area, and personal cards.
- Complete, thorough evaluation by a health professional, including appropriate assessment and pain management.
- An explanation of your diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis in understandable terms. This information can be made available to an interpreter of your choice, in your native language, if needed.
- Participate in decisions about your care, and give informed consent before any procedure is initiated. You may obtain a second opinion prior to any procedure.
- Receive an explanation of any research or experimental treatment or procedure, and give your informed consent before it begins.
- Refuse treatment, except as prohibited by law, and be informed of the consequences of making this decision.
- Request a chaperone to be present during your examination.
- Expect your personal privacy to be respected and protected by all staff at the Rutgers University Health Service in Newark
- Expect your medical records to be kept strictly confidential. Information will not be released without written consent of the patient except in cases of life-threatening emergency, under state-mandated laws regarding reporting of infectious diseases, or because of a legally issued subpoena.
- Review your medical records, and obtain copies (charge $.50 per page). Any notes, which you believe to be incorrect may be questioned and your comments inserted in the record.
- Receive explanation for any charges made by the health service, though they may be covered by the student insurance plan.
