Health and Social Justice Course

Student Health Associates Course studies This 4-credit writing intensive course includes a CASE component, which allows students to practically apply what they learn to real-life situations. College credit for this 300 level course is provided through both the Psychology and Women’s Studies Departments. The class meets on Friday mornings from 10am – 12:50pm.

In class, we explore the juxtaposition of health issues in the light of disparities due to socioeconomic, educational, gender, racial, cultural, behavioral, homophobia, and other factors. Topics covered include alcohol & drugs, AIDS, abortion, contraception, public health systems, sexual assault, sexual orientation, depression, and stress, environmental justice, healthy relationships, education, women’s and men’s health, handicaps, leadership, and many more issues.

This is a process class; participation is encouraged through class discussions and in essays relating to weekly assignments. Special class projects are planned each semester to enrich the class experience – participation in the Annual Health Fair, World AIDS Day, Kick Ash Day, Earth Day, and participation with a group in a book or film discussionStudent Health Associates Course studies

Many of the students fulfill their 1 CASE credit (30 hours per semester of community service, plus 10 hours through class projects) with either Student Health Advocates or UNITY Theatre. Others participate through service in local community agencies. Though the course may be taken for one semester only, a broader understanding of issues will result from taking this class for two semesters.
