Health Services

Medical Care

The Newark Health Center, located in Blumenthal Hall, Room 104, serves students, faculty and staff, keeping this campus population healthy and safe. Board-certified Doctors and Nurse Practitioners as well as a Registered Nurse, Registered Dietitian, Pharmacist, Health Technicians and others are on staff to provide medical and counseling services.

All full-time students are covered by Basic Health Insurance up to $5000 per illness, and are eligible for services. Part-time students may become eligible for a reasonable per-semester fee. Optional major medical policies are offered as well. Click here for more information on insurance coverage.

All eligible students have access to health services at any one of the five health centers of Rutgers University. (see information regarding RU Health Service and Camden Health Center at their web sites.)

Clinical and pharmacy services are extended to alumni and temporarily unregistered students for up to one year on a fee-for-service basis.

All services are private and confidential.

Off-Hours Nurse Answering Line
Students may contact our 24-HOUR NURSE LINE for consultation regarding health problems or questions, if staff is unavailable, eg, during evening, weekend, holidays or other closures. Nurse-line cannot schedule appointments, but can indicate the best "next-step" if you have a medical problem. The number is 1-866-221-9674.

Physical Examinations
Physical exams for jobs, athletics participation, scholastic programs, gynecological or medical checkups and screening laboratory tests are available as indicated.

Treatment for accidents and illness
Evaluations, first aid, treatment and follow up care are provided, and if necessary, referrals to specialists or for special studies are made.


Women's Health Care

Office gynecological services include exams with Pap smears, contraceptive services including birth control and "the morning-after" pills; breast exams, screening and treatment for sexually transmitted infections and treatment of other gynecological problems are provided. Counseling regarding pregnancy options, and referrals for prenatal care or pregnancy termination are made.


Men's Health Care

Preventive health services and screening for sexually transmitted infections and other health concerns unique to men are addressed during health visits.

Immunizations
MMR, Hepatitis A and B, Meningitis, Flu vaccine, Travel Immunizations, and more are available at a modest fee. Click here for more information.   More information >.

General Health Counseling
Nutrition, mental health, alcohol, drug and smoking cessation counseling are offered to students. A Weight reduction program and counseling regarding special diets is offered for interested students.

Pharmacy Service
Prescription and Over the Counter items, including herbal and homeopathic preparations are available at great cost savings to students and staff.   More Information >

Sexual Assault Services
Trained staff are available to assist students needing sexual assault services, including counselling, treatment and referrals. Click for more information.  More Information >

Charges and Payment
Pharmacy services, Immunizations, HIV screening, STD tests, blood typing and other screening tests, and allergy shots are provided on a reasonable fee-for-service basis. Payment can be made by cash, credit card (Visa, Mastercard or Discover) some other health plan cards, bursar billing or personal check.

Student Health Insurance
Basic coverage for eligible students is $5000. Optional Major Medical Insurance Policies are available to provide coverage of $100,00 at $424 per year or $250,000 at $552 per year, for accident or illness.   More Information>

Services for Faculty and Staff
Employees are evaluated, treated, and/or referred to specialists for work-related accidents or illnesses, and may obtain vaccinations, when indicated. Pre employment and periodic physical exams are performed for some employees.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING HEALTH SERVICES

Emergencies
Emergencies are defined as sudden, life-threatening, unexpected sickness or injury. The health centers are NOT emergency rooms On Newark Campus dial 5111 for Campus Police. From home - Dial 911 or go to your nearest hospital emergency room.

Costs will be covered up to the limits of your student health insurance policy for emergencies.

Urgent Problem
Call or come to the health service during regular business hours; and you will be seen as soon as possible. Some examples of urgent problems are acute illnesses, urinary tract infections, morning-after pill, pregnancy concerns, asthma, allergic reactions. Advise the receptionist regarding urgency of the problem and/or discuss with the nurse.

Non-emergency
Call and schedule an appointment at your earliest convenience.

Walk-in Hours (12 - 1:30pm weekdays daily)
Daily walk-in hours are maintained for same day acute problems (non-gynecological) and follow up of call backs and laboratory results.

Drug and Alcohol Services
For non-emergency problems, call the alcohol and drug assistance program for students.

Psychologists and psychiatrists available for short-term treatment of a range of mental health concerns. Group and individual therapy are available.
