Acute Care

Emergency and non-emergency health situations may arise while on campus, sometimes outside of the regular office hours of the Health Services Department, especially if you live on-campus in one of the residence halls. It is important to know where to turn when you find yourself in such a situation. Below are some possible situations and recommendations for dealing with them.

Medical Emergencies
breathing difficulties, severe bleeding, convulsions, unconsciousness, head injuries, assault, domestic violence, acute allergic reactions, etc
Call 973-353-5111 for police emergency line or 911 if located off campus
Assess the student's condition and call for an ambulance; . Provide first aid at the scene if you are qualified to do so. Stay with the student until help arrives. Stay calm.
Mental Health Emergencies
depression, suicidal, paranoid, destructive.
If it becomes clear that a student might harm him/herself or others, accompany that person to the nearest health center if he/she will go. If a student refuses and you feel that this is an emergency, call for assistance and transportation. On campus in Newark, dial 973-353-5111; elsewhere, dial 911.
Drug or Alcohol Emergencies
Ingested large amount of drugs (including alcohol) and/or is hyperactive, drowsy, or unconscious.
For emergency transportation call 973-353-5111 (Newark campus), or 911 if located elsewhere.
Sexual Assault or unwanted sexual contact
For emergencies, call 973-353-5111 (Newark campus), or 911 if located elsewhere.
During office hours (Mon-Fri, 8:30-4:30), call the Sexual Assault Help-line at 973-353-HELP.
Contact the Essex County Rape Care Hotline at 1-877-733-CARE (2273) to speak anonymously to a trained advocate.
Urgent or Non-emergency Drug or Alcohol Problems
Call Alcohol and Drug Assistance Program for Students- 973-353-1236 Located Blumenthal Hall, Rm 101
Urgent Conditions
acute illness, urinary tract symptoms, STD exposure, pregnancy concerns, emergency post coital contraception, acute rashes, vomiting, local allergic reactions, etc.
Go to the health center as soon as possible and tell the receptionist the nature of the problem so you may be assisted as soon as possible.
Minor Injuries (non-emergency)
small cuts, infections, sprains, etc., or COMMON MINOR ILLNESSES (non-emergency): headaches, prolonged cough or stuffy nose, sore throat, etc.
Make an appointment at the health center. Call 973-353-5231 in Newark. Appointments are available from 8:30am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday.

You may also appear without an appointment, but waiting times may vary and may be lengthy.

Mental Health Concerns (non-emergency)
anxiety, confusion, troubled, academic and/or personal concerns, etc.
Make an appointment to see a psychiatrist or psychologist at the counseling center on campus, (973) 353-5805. Located at Blumenthal Hall, Room 101 or consult Health Center staff at 973-353-5231.
